Admission Requirements

An application must include:

  • Official transcripts from every post-secondary institution you have attended
  • At least three letters of recommendation, preferably from recommenders in academic or professional positions.
  • Proof of teacher certification in Science, preferably in Biology.
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in the United States or from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad in content and number of credit hours with that granted by the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.
  • A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (A=4.0), or comparable GPA for an international applicant, for the last two years of the undergraduate program is the minimum requirement for admission.

International Student Admission Requirements

These are the requirements as listed on the graduate admissions page for international students, in addition to those listed above:

  • Submission of a $90.00 application fee (effective with 2011 applications).
  • International applicants who are requesting F-1 or J-1 visa eligibility documents are required to submit Proof of Funding Documentation.
  • Provide evidence of English Proficiency.

    International applicants must meet minimum requirements based on their country of origin.

    Students whose native language is not English must present their official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination as part of their applications with the following required minimum scores:

    • 613 on the paper-based test,
    • 257 on the computer-based test,
    • 103-104 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
  • TOEFL must be taken within two years of the proposed term of entry; older scores are not valid. Request that the official TOEFL scores be sent directly to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The institution number is 1836 and the program code is 00 or 35.
